COLUMN: Roger Federer can help create a ceasefire

Roger Federer should intervene to stop tennis’ civil war from turning ugly. Novak Djokovic has morphed into Robin Hood, trying to take from the rich governing bodies and give to the ‘poor’ players.

But the legal battle launched by Djokovic’s Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA) has serious potential to divide the sport in two. It could have a similarly catastrophic impact as LIV Golf had on the PGA Tour.

It is understandable for Djokovic to hold a grudge with the governing bodies. He has never been shown the same love and affection that Federer or Rafael Nadal got.

And now he is coming for them for taking too much of the prize pot home.

Both parties have been vicious in their statements – only someone of Federer’s stature can create a ceasefire.

The eight-time Wimbledon champion has good relations with all sides and must be tennis’ saviour again.

McIlroy golden chance

RORY McIlroy will not get a better chance of completing the career grand slam than this year.

World No.1 and defending Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is off the boil and nursing a hand injury, while McIlroy finally seems to have his affairs in order – both on the course and in his personal life.

Borthwick bold call

FOR all the criticism Steve Borthwick receives over England’s style of play, his brave decision to remove Jamie George from the captaincy paid dividends.

Maro Itoje has become a different beast with the extra responsibility and is a nailed-on starter for the British and Irish Lions – and it’s all thanks to Borthwick’s call.
