Patriots reportedly sign WR Stefon Diggs to 3-year contract

The Patriots reportedly have their new No. 1 wide receiver.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots have signed veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million contract — with $26 million guaranteed.

The move gives Drake Maye and a Patriots offense short of proven playmakers an established veteran with a lofty resume — although there are a few concerns about Diggs’ health at this stage of his career.

Diggs, who will turn 32 in November, has held court as one of the most dynamic pass-catchers in the league over the last few years —  posting six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with the Vikings and Bills from 2018-23.

He appeared in eight games with the Houston Texans last season, recording 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns before suffering a torn ACL in October that ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

Diggs’ visited the Patriots’ last week on a free-agent visit — a meeting that Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz described as “more of a “get to know you” and “where you’re at medically” type of meeting.”

While Diggs’ recovery from the ACL injury could hinder some of his offseason regimen or availability during training camp, ESPN’s Mike Reiss noted on Sunday that Diggs is “ahead of schedule” in his recovery.

Even with some of those concerns regarding Diggs’ knee, the Patriots were in desperate need of a star talent to pair with Maye — with Diggs immediately vaulting to the top of New England’s depth chart at wide receiver.

New England has not had a wide receiver surpass 1,000 yards in a single season since Julian Edelman in 2019, with DeMario Douglas leading all Patriots receivers in 2024 with 66 catches and 621 receiving yards.

Diggs now joins a wideout room in Foxborough that includes Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Kendrick Bourne, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Javon Baker.

The Patriots spent a majority of this offseason searching for a top pass-catcher, with the team coming up short in pursuits for targets like DK Metcalf, Cooper Kupp, Deebo Samuel, and Chris Godwin via trade or free agency.
